Friday Forecast

Today, we had a lot of fun with our first CAD! Please ask your student what they signed up for! Maybe they met a new friend or two in a different class as well! :) We are looking forward to our next one!

Our composting program continues to run smoothly.

Today we also discussed Orange Shirt Day in preparation for September 30th and for our school's recognition of it on Monday, October 1st.

We were able to spend some time today collecting some leaves to look at next week.

We will be testing out our basketball skills with the Grade 5/6s next week as well!

Our practice with even and odd numbers will continue as will our understanding of expected and unexpected behaviour in the classroom, as we continue to improve our listening and cooperation skills.

Trees Out of Blocks?

Today, we worked on reviewing unexpected and expected behaviour. We will continue to work on this and connect it with our zones knowledge.

We also worked on combining our knowledge of deciduous and coniferous trees to build trees out of blocks.

We learned how to estimate and then to subtract the difference between our estimate and the actual number of blocks.

Wednesday

Today, we were continuing our zones work and thinking about different situations and how some actions in them are expected and unexpected. We will continue to match this with our zones work and think about how expected/green zone behaviors look and make others feel as well as the tools needed to change unexpected behavior to expected.  Social Thinking teaches that students may be able to change their behavior when they think through a situation through social mapping.  If you would like more information, please let me know.

Please consider reviewing with your child what is expected (appropriate) and unexpected (inappropriate/disruptive) in different situations such as at home, on the bus, or at school.

We have also discussed how our behavior affects others and what we can do to apologize and make things better when others are hurt or upset by our behaviour.

Today, we reviewed what makes a number even. Challenge your student to put items in groups of 2 to determine whether there is an odd one out or not!

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters, held October 1st this year at Cambrian Heights School, campaigns annually to keep the discussion going around all aspects of residential schools. This day is an opportunity to pause to remember and honour residential school survivors, and those whose lives were ended too soon.  We take the opportunity around this time to reflect on history, legacy and implications, discuss stories of survival and strength, and share ways we can work together toward reconciliation.

Tuesday

Good afternoon,

We were excited to be out enjoying the sunshine today!

Today, we reviewed the difference between a city and a province and why we have capital cities. We counted the number of provinces, territories, and capital cities. See if you child can remember how many there are and maybe even name a few!

Our 3D tree art that we worked on with the 5/6s are complete! We are excited to post them in our class and share our talent!

Our basketball dribbling skills are improving.

In our zones learning, we talked about being a community as a country, school, city, and classroom.

We also drew or wrote what tools help us get back to the green zone when we are in the blue, yellow, or red zones! Ask your child what works for them!

Monday Moments

Today, PLP had a great time celebrating and honouring Terry Fox with a Terry Fox Run in the morning with the rest of the school, and supporting the PM Kindies along with the grade 5/6 class in the afternoon.

Along with the Terry Fox Run, we concluded learning about Terry Fox with an assembly as well as looking at the math that goes along with how old Terry Fox was compared to how old we are, how many provinces his marathon reached, and how much money he raised compared to his goal.

Continuing with our Zones lessons, we were looking at when it was expected to be in each zone. Ask your child when it is okay or expected to be in each zone.

We are finishing up our tree art project with the 5/6s and then will get out into nature to examine the trees in the playground as review and remember the differences between deciduous and coniferous.

During our morning routine, students are now being challenged to work on the months of the year if they have been doing well with the days of the week! Challenge your student to remember the days of the week in order and to practice the spelling. Short forms are also a challenge to practice!

Friday Forecast

Good morning!

It has been wonderful meeting with parents at learning conferences these week!

We are looking forward to participating in the Terry Fox Run on Monday morning. We will finish up learning about him and applying that to our  exploring math in the world around us, thinking about how far Terry travelled and how his age was different from ours and how long ago the original Marathon of Hope took place.

We will be continuing to review our Zones of Regulation, and recognizing how each zone is expected in different situations and unexpected in others. We will be working on tools that we can use to help ourselves and our friends in these zones. We will also be working on thinking about how we talk to ourselves using an inner critic and inner coach voice.

We continue to go to the library each week and have time each day for students to read their library books or books from the classroom library. Students picked out their first home reading book. Please ask your student to bring it home if they haven't.

We continue to look at trees around us, and this is being reflected in our continuing art activity with the 5/6 class.  Please ask your student why they are grateful for trees! We have also used trees as a way to estimate, tally, and count in the world around us!  We will be building our own trees next week, estimating and counting each block that we used to build a tree. Weather permitting, we hope to examine and sketch trees and leaves up close to look at colour and texture, as well as to think about how the trees and leaves change with each season, just like the changing temperature and weather that we look at each morning.

We continue to think about how we can help the environment through our composting, recycling, etc. and have read some stories as a class to think about how we can be better dragons and take care of the world around us! Ask your student about wearing dragon tails!

In gym, we are continuing to work on our dribbling, passing and teamwork skills as well as enjoying the warm weather as it lasts, exercising on the playground.

In math, we are reviewing how numbers can be expressed in different ways using tally, power of ten, money, fact families, place value, etc.

Cambrian Heights Terry Fox Run

Dear Parents/Guardians:
On Monday, September 24th, 2018 all students in grades K-6 will be taking part in the annual Terry Fox School Run.  The event will begin with an assembly in the gym at 9:00am where we will be watching a short video and warming up for the run with upbeat music.  Parents are welcome to join us for the event by running with or cheering on our students. PM Kindergarten will have the opportunity to run in the afternoon at starting at 1:00pm in the gym with the support of the Grade 5/6 students.
Through our participation in this annual event we hope that our school community can see them selves as active citizens with the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of all Canadians. Terry Fox is a shining example of how one person can make a difference, and we hope to extend his legacy of raising money for cancer research.
For more information or to donate directly please visit the Terry Fox Foundation
We will be encouraging students to bring a “Toonie for Terry.” All monies raised will be forwarded to The Terry Fox Foundation.

Week Three!

We are continuing to learn about weather temperatures and figuring out that higher numbers mean warmer weather.

This week we have been collaborating with the 5/6 class on an art project putting to use our knowledge of coniferous and deciduous trees that we have been building on.

We have practiced running for our school's Terry Fox Run as a part of our gym class and working with other classes as well.

During gym class, we have been working on our basketball and teamwork skills.

We are finishing up learning each of the four Zones of Regulation. We will then be looking at when each of these zones is acceptable in each situation and what tools we can use to address each zone. We really want to learn how to support our friends in the class when they are in different zones.
Please ask your students what each of the zones mean.

Week Two!

I enjoyed meeting the PLP parents during our Orientation and Dance this past Wednesday!

A reminder that on the evening of Thursday, September 21, 2018 and during the day on Friday, September 2018, Parent Conferences are being held.

Students continue to review days of the week, and connecting how they feel outside with the weather to the temperature highs and lows, as well as what they are wearing to stay warm with the changing weather.

In PLP, we have been reviewing our fact families, including addition and subtraction.

We have also been reading as a class and individually.

We are continuing to learn about the composting cycle and had a successful first compost pickup.

We are learning about the different Zones of Regulation and how we feel and how others feel all impact our classroom community. We have also been acting out how these emotions look to help us become more self-aware.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

Hello!

My name is Emily Fraser and I am currently the Paced Learning Program teacher at Cambrian Heights!  I am very happy to be a part of this amazing learning community!

I am very excited for the new school year and to work with each of your children in this unique and successful learning environment.

Please continue to check back on this blog each week to see what PLP is doing throughout the school year!

So far, we have enjoyed getting to know each other, including some new students who have joined us in the program. We have also reviewed how best to learn and support each other's learning.

We are going to be collecting the school's compost from each classroom! We have learned about the composting cycle as well as recycling!

This week we will start integrating with the 5/6 class and make some new friends/visit with some old ones!

And, of course, looking around us and seeing how literacy and numeracy fit into our lives each day!

I look forward to meeting you at the Orientation/Dance on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 from 6-8pm!
