Hats On For Mental Health

Hello Room One Families!

On May 1, 2019, Cambrian Heights students are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Students will also participate in coordinated lessons throughout the next couple of weeks on understanding mental wellness, and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental health.

You can learn more about Hats On! For Mental Health by visiting canwetalk.ca, a website sponsored by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association that includes a variety of mental health resources for schools.

The focus on mental health promotion continues during Mental Health Week, which is being held this year from May 6 to 10. Students who are mentally healthy are resilient and better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships.

You can learn more about supporting positive mental health in schools by visiting the Alberta government website at www.alberta.ca/mental-health-in-schools.aspx.

April 22-26 Update

Hello Room One Families!

The blog is finally back up and working!

This week we had our spelling test, as there was no school last Friday, and have new words for this week. Please look in students journals for the list of the words to practice at home! Yesterday we created sentences using our new spelling words, and today we typed up our completed sentences on laptops. Tomorrow we will have our spelling test so please make sure to practice spelling words tonight!

This week we started a new novel study on Charlotte's Web. We are completing chapter summaries and making predictions about future chapters.

In Math, we started greater than and less than. Last week we had been practicing making numbers using 100's, 10's, and 1's, and are now connecting that work to comparing numbers and writing greater than and less than number sentences.

April 1st-5th

Friday April 5, 2019

Hello everyone!

In case I have not had the opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Ms. Lotoski and I am the PLP teacher at Cambrian Heights School. I am so excited to be back from my maternity leave and finish out the year strong with the students in Room One!

This week we started weekly spelling. Each Monday going forward, students will receive a list of 8-10 words. We will use these words in a variety of activities throughout the week, and on Fridays we will have a spelling test. We will be sure to write our words out in our journals on Mondays, so please practice with your child every night!!

We have also revamped the Home Reading Program. Starting next week, students will be bringing home a ziploc bag with a home reading log, as well as books at their current reading level. Each night, we ask that you set aside 5-10 minutes to read these books with your child, and when they are finished reading, to fill out their reading log with them. Within the log, you will be asked to fill in a couple of pieces of information, such as the title of the book, if students were able to read independently or needed help. There is a small comment section where you can communicate important information, such as if they struggled with specific words, if the book was too easy/ difficult, etc. We strongly encourage these books be read each night, as we have found students able to improve their reading and increase their reading fluency and comprehension. Additionally, to extend this reading time, we find it is helpful to ask follow up comprehension based questions about the books your child just read. Questions could be "Who was the story about?", "What did the characters in the story do?", "Where did the story take place", and/ or "Why do you think that happened?".

Important Dates:
-April 12th CAD
-April 17th- Spring Concert
-April 19th- Good Friday; No School
-April 22nd- Non- Instructional Day; No School for Students

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at ajgurin@cbe.ab.ca or by phone at 403-777-6150.
