This Week So Far

We have started working our learning how to read maps and think about why we use them and how they can help us!

We have been working on making our own treasure maps practicing making a legend, compass rose, etc.

We had an assembly

We have been applying our shape and pattern knowledge to our sight words!

Today we wore pink for Pink Shirt Day and talked about friendship, kindness, and respecting our differences. We also watched a video of how we can brighten someone's day with very simple deeds.

We worked as a class on our calendar knowledge of identifying dates and distances between dates, etc.

Continuing with our maps, coloured land, building and water on our maps.

We also worked on identifying objects in our homes that are made from recycled things!

We tested our sorting skills and found items in the classroom and worked to determine what our sorting group had in common.

We are excited for our Three Left Feet Showcase tomorrow at 12:35pm. We had a great dress rehearsal today!

Monday

Today, we worked through our March calendars as a class. They have been added to our home books to help us keep track of each day!

We sorted different objects based on colour, size, and shape.

We listened to Mr. Eakins read We are Wonders today as a school. We talked about how we can make our school community even better through friendship and kindness.

We continue to play our recorders in music and make great music!

Next Week

We had a lot of fun with our new CAD groups last Friday!

Next week, we will be continuing to dance with Three Left Feet! On February 28th from 12:45-1:35 pm, families and invited guests are welcome to check out our dance moves during the showcase!

Thank you to parents who have paid their fees and returned the field trip forms for Telus Spark on March 7th.

On Wednesday, we will be recognizing Pink Shirt Day and celebrating our differences, kindness, and friendship. Pink Shirt Day is a day when everyone is accepted and valued as they are. No one should be judging a person by what they wear or where they were born because each person is unique. Pink Shirt Day celebrates and embraces the differences that each person has. This is also a day to celebrate friendships and kindness. Feel free to have your student wear any pink that they own. We will be discussing kindness, diversity, and friendship throughout the week as a class and school.

As we continue to work on patterns, we will look at the attributes that we used to make patterns and apply them to sorting different objects as well.

We are continuing to look at ways we can reduce, reuse as well as recycle.

We will practice using our days of the week memory game and finalizing our March calendars.

                                                                    Typing away!

We started thinking about our March calendars and adding the holidays and days off.

We continue to develop our typing skills following our library time.

Our pattern knowledge is increasing as we recognize, label, and create patterns using shapes, colours, etc.

We completed our writing prompt today using a picture. We have some great creative ideas!

Tuesday

Today, we shared about our long weekends and reflected on the good deeds we did to celebrate kindness, friendship, and Valentine’s Day.

We also reviewed when to call 911 and what we should say when we call. We will look at learning our phone numbers and addresses in the future.

We practiced our conversation skills and learned more about each other.

In small groups, we also reviewed what has been happening on our February calendars and time and seasons connected to our daily schedules.

Some of us enjoyed playing Star Wars operation to practice our fine motor, teamwork and turn-taking skills.

 We are still enjoying puzzles!

In math, we started identifying and making patterns.

We are continuing to work on looking at picture clues and identifying beginning, middle and end of stories, including learning the setting and characters, and identifying and solving a problem.

This Week

I hope that everyone had a great long weekend! :)

We are hoping to take some time outside in the mornings for some fresh air as we will have Three Left Feet dancing on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon this week. The dancing will be both our gym and music time.

We will be continuing our time and calendar practice, as we start to look at March and planning ahead and applying our developing knowledge of routines, schedules, and events.

This week, we will be looking at how to read pictures to help us think about what might be happening in a story, or what we could use from the picture to write our own story. We have been practicing identifying beginning, middle, and end in stories that we have been reading, as well as examples of  places, time, problems and their solutions to help us work towards writing our own story.

We are starting to include typing as part of our library days to help us with our letter and word recognition as well as proper finger placement.

We are starting to look at making patterns and connecting that with our time, calendar, and routine focus.

Some of us have also been doing really well asking other staff members for help around the school!

This Friday, we will be starting a new round of CAD and will be signing up for these new sessions tomorrow!

100th day of school

On Wednesday,  we celebrated the 100th day of school by colouring and counting shapes that added up to 100.

We also talked about how we can be kind to others today and exchanged valentines.

We had a lot of fun reading a book about nursery rhymes to help us remember what words rhyme and have some fun remembering being younger!

A class discussion about when to call 911 and when not to continued our theme of asking for help within the school and community.

We also reviewed different parts of composting and then made a composting candy treat to celebrate our hard work with composting so far this school year!

We practiced our tic tac toe skills as well!

Three Left Feet

Three Left Feet

Cambrian Heights is excited to welcome Three Left Feet for an active and energetic five-day residency in February! From February 20th – 21st and February 26th to 28th, students will participate in an incredible Sound Powered Dance Project. Check out the Three Left Feet website at http://www.threeleftfeet.ca/ or on Twitter at ‎@TLFyyc.
Three Left Feet's high-voltage vibe is inspired by funky West African rhythms and characterized by Canadian innovation for a truly world beat feel. Aligned with the Alberta Programs of Study, students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities which will allow them to understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity, while interacting positively with others. Students will select, perform and refine basic dance steps and patterns as well as demonstrate a variety of dances - full student participation provides opportunities for great accomplishments and self-expression.
An in-school performance will be on Thursday, February 28th. There will be two different showcases which families can attend. Group 1 will perform at 9:45 AM -10:35 AM and Group 2 will perform at 12:45 PM - 1:35 PM. More information will be coming home as to which group your child will perform in.
As always, we welcome the entire Cambrian Heights School community to share in and enjoy these performances by our students.
Performance Details:
Thursday, February 28, 2019
9:45 AM – Group 1
12:45 PM – Group 2

This Week

We are looking at the beginning, middle, and end of a story. We also looked at using a front cover and an image to prompt us to write a story in groups. We are working towards writing our own story using a picture prompt.

We continue to work on including our developing time and calendar skills in our daily homebook and literacy routines.

Next week, we will be practicing asking for help and then interacting with different members of the school community.

We will also be working on following instructions, discussing the importance of not interrupting, and reviewing our listening skills.

We will also take a look at what our recycling is turned into once it gets picked up!

As a class, we will also be celebrating Valentine's Day next Wednesday. Please see the note home with classmate names if you choose to participate in distributing valentines.  Please include every classmate. Please do not send in any candy, chocolate, or baked goods.  A class treat will be provided.

Wednesday is also a spirit day for the school with Random Acts of Kindness Day.  You are welcome to wear shirts with positive messages!

Just a reminder that next Thursday, February 14th, 2019 and Friday, February 15th, 2019 there will be no school as it is Teacher's Convention. The following Monday is also Family Day.

We will complete composting on Wednesday and will let you know about an alternate library day as well.
