Friday June 7/ Friday Forecast

Hello Parents!

We have had an extremely busy week at Cambrian Heights! This week students took part in a Rocks and Rings Curling Residency, presented by Curling Canada. Students had the opportunity to learn about curling rules, etiquette, and participated in a variety of drills, relays, and team building activities. The PLP program had so much fun learning about curling!

In math, students continued their work with perimeter. This week we completed first name and last name initials, built them with unifix cubes, and transferred them onto graph paper. We then calculated the perimeter using our knowledge of single and double digit addition.

In literacy, we have been continuing our work with our spelling words. Students were challenged to create two to four paragraph stories using all 8 of their spelling words. While it was an ambitious task, it was great to see how creative students became in trying to fit in all of their spelling words!

In math, students have started their subtraction unit. Students learned what it means to subtract two numbers, as well as important rules for subtracting, such as which number always goes first (the bigger number!). Students then learned about three different strategies they can use to solve their subtraction problems. The first strategy is to use manipulatives to make the subtraction problem. A second strategy is to draw a picture. The third strategy is to draw/ use a number line.
Students will be practicing these three strategies over the next two weeks so they can get comfortable with using them independently. If you would like to extend their learning at home, please feel free to give students subtraction questions at home between 0-30 to practice!

Monday Forecast!

Hello Room One Parents,

Today we received new spelling words! Below you will find our new list. While some of these words may be easy for students to spell, we use this list to make sentences, as well as complete literacy centres such as putting words in abc order, learning about vowels, syllables, word meanings, correcting grammar, synonyms, antonyms, etc. Students are also using their weekly spelling words to type on the computers (and put them in sentences and create stories), which is helping students learn about technology and how to access different apps on the computer.

Students are starting chapter 6 of Charlotte's Web. We have been working on prediction of upcoming plots, retelling chapters through summaries, making inferences based on information we just read or background knowledge, as well as making connections. Today, students got to look at pictures of my weekend on a farm, watch a couple of videos of cows and tractors, and even got to touch straw. Some students were able to make connections about the videos and pictures to what they had read so far in Charlotte's Web!

In math, students are learning about important addition strategies. We worked on using a 0-100 number line, skip counting, and addition with a number +1, +2, +5, and +10. You can extend this learning at home by practicing addition questions using any number + 1, +2, + 5, and +10. An example of this could be:

20+1=
20+2=
20+5=
20+10=

If you would like your own 0-100 number line to use at home, please send me an email and I would be happy to send one home for you!

2. is
3. you
4. yes
